SEEDS FOR REFLECTION
The Time to Be Happy Is Now
“Time to be happy is now,
Place to be happy is here,
And the way to be happy is to make someone happy
And have a little heaven right here.”
This simple nursery rhyme has remained one of my favorites for many years. Though its words are easy enough for a child to understand, they contain a wisdom that many of us spend a lifetime trying to learn. In just a few lines, it reminds us of an important truth: happiness is not something we must endlessly pursue somewhere in the future. It is a gift that can be discovered in the present moment, in the place where God has planted us, and in the love we share with others.
How often do we tell ourselves that we will be happy when certain things happen? We may think, “I will be happy when my problems are solved, when I retire, when my health improves, when my family situation changes, or when life becomes easier.” Yet, life has a way of presenting new challenges just as old ones disappear. If we wait for perfect circumstances before allowing ourselves to be happy, we may find that happiness always remains just beyond our reach.
The rhyme begins by reminding us that the time to be happy is now. This echoes the words of Scripture: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Every day is a gift from God, a day that will never come again. We do not know what tomorrow holds, but we do know that God is with us today. When we learn to recognize His blessings in the present moment, gratitude begins to replace anxiety, and joy takes root in our hearts. Joy multiplies when it is shared.
A candle does not lose its light by lighting another candle. In the same way, your kindness does not become smaller when you give it away. Your love does not become less when you share it.
Your joy does not diminish when you bring joy to another person.
